Sargent was an American painter considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation". He was a very prolific in his lifetime creating about 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors. His portrait work used the "grand manner" of portraiture, making it realistic and luminous. His landscape paintings took on a more Impressionistic style. His parents were from America but most of his training happened in France at École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts.
